Transforming Phoenix Parks: The Importance of Green Spaces
In urban areas like Phoenix, the effects of rising temperatures can be debilitating, leading to uncomfortable living conditions for residents. Project EverGreen, in collaboration with ScottsMiracle-Gro, has taken a pivotal step in addressing this issue by launching the second phase of a major park renovation at Barrios Unidos Park. This initiative, part of their GreenCare for Communities program, aims to create cooler, greener spaces right in the heart of one of Phoenix's most heat-stressed neighborhoods.
A Community-Centric Approach
Located in close proximity to Sky Harbor Airport, Barrios Unidos Park has historically struggled against the urban heat island effect, a phenomenon that significantly raises local temperatures. The first phase of the renovation, completed in fall 2024, involved planting 50 mature shade trees, including Southern Live Oak and Evergreen Elms, as well as expanding the park’s irrigation system to ensure the sustenance of these crucial plants.
As part of the second phase, which concluded in May 2025, the park's softball field will be revitalized, making it accessible and inviting for community gatherings. This phase includes several improvements—grading the infield, installing fresh bermudagrass sod, and adding eighty native plants that will enhance the park’s aesthetic while promoting local biodiversity.
The Environmental Impact
According to Project EverGreen's Clean Air Calculator, the enhancements made in both phases of the project are expected to sequester over 250,000 pounds of carbon, generating more than 381,000 yards of clean air annually. This impact is equivalent to removing the emissions of about 32 cars from the area, underscoring the vital role green spaces play in improving urban air quality.
Cindy Code, executive director of Project EverGreen, eloquently states, "Green spaces are far more than an amenity. They are essential infrastructure that promote public health, environmental equity, and stronger communities.” This highlights how collaborative efforts can yield transformative results, benefitting both the environment and local residents.
Creating Spaces for Connection
John Sass, senior vice president of Lawns for ScottsMiracle-Gro, emphasizes the significant role that green spaces have in community interaction and mental well-being. “Lawns and green spaces are where real life happens,” he notes, reflecting on how these areas serve as vital spots for social gathering and outdoor enjoyment. The renovation of Barrios Unidos Park will not only enhance physical infrastructure but also stimulate community connections.
The Bigger Picture: Addressing Urban Heat
As cities around the world grapple with the realities of climate change, initiatives like Project EverGreen's expansion offer a blueprint for successful urban sustainability. Green spaces are crucial for mitigating heat, promoting environmental benefits, and enriching community life. They serve as necessary infrastructure rather than mere amenities, providing resilience against rising temperatures and improving livability.
Homeowners and business owners alike should recognize the importance of investing in green infrastructure—whether through community initiatives or personal landscaping. Advocate for local green projects, become involved, or even consider beautifying your own spaces. Together, we can create a healthier, more sustainable environment.
